Secret Life of Dolphins (V08)

Think you know everything about dolphins? Stay tuned as we expose the reality of these misunderstood marine mammals.

Objective: The students will be introduced to dolphin reality; dolphin anatomy and adaptations; dolphin society; dolphin behavior; dolphin research; and dolphin conservation. Students will learn the popular misconceptions about dolphins and why they are often misunderstood.

Time required: Approximately 50 minutes.

Cost: $155.00 USD program fee.

Recommended Grade Level: 9th-12th grade (students age 14-18 years).

Materials: To participate in this program, you will need the following:

1. A videoconferencing system capable of 384 Kbps or more, either IP or ISDN (required).
2. SeaTrek companion curriculum for Secret Life of Dolphins
   (See curriculum appendix for alignment to National and Sunshine State Standards)
   1. High School (grades 9-12) (optional)

3. Mote eNotes: Dolphins and Whales (optional).

Overview: In this videoconference, Mote Marine Laboratory will present a media-rich videoconference on dolphins. Topics include:

• Basic mammalian and specfic dolphin anatomy and physiology.
• The resident dolphins of Brookfield Zoo and their life histories.
• Double Dolphin game featuring dolphin diets, behavior and communication.
• Wild dolphin research featuring the work of Dr. Randy Wells.
• Question and Answer featuring live video from our Dolphin and Whale Hospital.
